High passes and mountain lakes
Leh is at about 3,500 metres, and flying in gives your body no time to adjust. The usual advice is to rest for the first day or two, drink plenty of water and avoid hard exercise before going higher. Count those rest days as part of the trip when you plan.
From Leh, most trips add Nubra Valley over Khardung La and Pangong Tso over Chang La. Both are long drives over high passes. Check the current permit rules on the official Ladakh tourism website before you go, because the rules for these areas have changed over the years.
Best places to visit in Ladakh
You will not fit all of these into one trip, and you should not try. The itinerary that works is the one where your flights and hotel bases all point at the same route. Travelling with parents, young children or first-time international travellers? Cut the number of hotel changes and stay in areas with easier transport, even if it costs a little more per night.
Leh
The old town, Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa and the main market. It is the base for every other trip and the place to rest while you acclimatise.
Monasteries near Leh
Thiksey, Hemis and Shey are easy day trips. Hemis is the largest and holds a festival in summer.
Nubra Valley
Sand dunes at Hunder, Diskit Monastery and the drive over Khardung La. Stay at least one night, because a same-day return is tiring.
Pangong Tso
A long lake whose colour shifts through the day. Nights by the lake are very cold even in summer, so check that your camp or hotel has heating or warm bedding.
Tso Moriri
A quieter and higher lake further south, for travellers with more time.
Suggested route from India
A common plan is two nights in Leh to acclimatise, two in Nubra, one at Pangong and a final night in Leh before the flight. Some drivers go from Nubra to Pangong directly. Ask whether that road is open on your dates.
Before you book, check whether your arrival city and departure city should be different. Open-jaw tickets can save backtracking on larger countries, while short-haul trips may work better with one simple return ticket. Also compare baggage allowance, airport transfer cost and hotel check-in timing because those details often decide whether a cheap fare is actually a good fare.
Flights, hotels and booking notes
Delhi to Leh flights are short, and on a clear morning the mountain views make a window seat worth booking. Flights to Leh mostly leave early in the day, and weather can still cause delays, so leave a buffer before any onward connection home.
Hotels are simpler than in the plains, and hot water and heating matter more than room size. Local taxi unions run most sightseeing, and rented motorbikes need care on the high passes. Carry cash, because card machines and mobile networks are patchy outside Leh.
One more practical check for Ladakh: look at the local events calendar, school holidays, weather pattern and public transport hours before final payment. A destination can look affordable on the fare screen and become expensive because the best hotel area is sold out, a major festival has raised room rates, or the arrival time forces a private transfer. Build the plan in this order: entry rules, flight gateway, hotel area, local transport, then paid attractions.
Do not choose a trip only from postcard places. The useful plan is the one that connects intent to action: the right trip length, sensible transport, hotels in the correct area and flights that do not make the first day miserable.
