Beaches, old churches and slow food

Palm trees and beach shacks along a quiet beach in South Goa at sunset
  • November to February has dry, pleasant weather and the busiest beaches. March to May is hot. June to September brings heavy monsoon rain, quieter beaches and lower hotel prices.
  • 4 to 6 days covers one beach base and a day in Old Goa or Panjim.

Goa is small on the map, but where you stay changes the whole trip. North Goa beaches such as Baga, Calangute and Anjuna are busy, with clubs, markets and heavy traffic in peak season. South Goa around Palolem, Agonda and Colva is quieter and better for long beach days. Pick the area first, then the hotel.

The second decision is the airport. Goa has two: Dabolim (GOI) near Vasco and Manohar International at Mopa (GOX) in the far north. The taxi ride from one airport to a beach at the other end of the state can take two hours or more, so check which airport your flight uses before you book a hotel.

Best places to visit in Goa

You will not fit all of these into one trip, and you should not try. The itinerary that works is the one where your flights and hotel bases all point at the same route. Travelling with parents, young children or first-time international travellers? Cut the number of hotel changes and stay in areas with easier transport, even if it costs a little more per night.

Baga, Calangute and Candolim

The busiest stretch of North Goa, with water sports, beach shacks and nightlife. Candolim is a little calmer than Baga. Expect crowds and slow traffic from mid-December to New Year.

Anjuna, Vagator and Morjim

Cliffs, sunset spots and the Anjuna flea market on Wednesdays during the season. Morjim and Ashwem, further north, are quieter and closer to Mopa airport.

Panjim (Panaji)

The state capital, with the old Latin Quarter of Fontainhas, riverside walks and good local restaurants. It is a useful base if you want to mix beaches with sightseeing.

Old Goa

The Basilica of Bom Jesus and Se Cathedral are a short drive from Panjim. Go in the morning, before the heat and the tour buses.

Palolem and Agonda

South Goa beaches with calm water, beach huts and a slower pace. They suit families and couples who want rest more than parties.

Dudhsagar Falls

A tall waterfall on the Goa and Karnataka border, at its fullest after the monsoon. You reach it by jeep through the forest, and access usually closes during heavy rain, so check before you keep a day for it.

Suggested route from India

For a first trip, split the stay: three nights in North Goa near Candolim or Anjuna and two nights in South Goa near Palolem or Agonda, with a stop at Panjim and Old Goa on the way down. If your flight lands at Mopa, start in the north. If it lands at Dabolim, starting in the south saves a long drive on the first day.

Before you book, check whether your arrival city and departure city should be different. Open-jaw tickets can save backtracking on larger countries, while short-haul trips may work better with one simple return ticket. Also compare baggage allowance, airport transfer cost and hotel check-in timing because those details often decide whether a cheap fare is actually a good fare.

Flights, hotels and booking notes

Delhi to Goa flights and Mumbai to Goa flights have many daily options, so you can compare departure times as well as price. Check the arrival airport on each flight card. A cheaper fare into Mopa can end up costing more once you add a long taxi ride to a South Goa hotel.

Hotel prices jump sharply between Christmas and New Year. Book early for those dates, or travel in November or late January instead. Scooters are the usual way to get around, but you need a valid licence and a helmet, and a taxi is the safer choice at night.

One more practical check for Goa: look at the local events calendar, school holidays, weather pattern and public transport hours before final payment. A destination can look affordable on the fare screen and become expensive because the best hotel area is sold out, a major festival has raised room rates, or the arrival time forces a private transfer. Build the plan in this order: entry rules, flight gateway, hotel area, local transport, then paid attractions.

Do not choose a trip only from postcard places. The useful plan is the one that connects intent to action: the right trip length, sensible transport, hotels in the correct area and flights that do not make the first day miserable.
