Hills, backwaters and coast

Houseboat on a palm-lined canal in the Alleppey backwaters of Kerala
  • September to March is the most comfortable time, and December and January are the busiest months. June to August is the monsoon, when the hills are green and prices drop, but some outdoor plans get washed out.
  • 6 to 8 days covers Kochi, Munnar, the backwaters and one beach.

Most Kerala trips follow the same line: the hills of Munnar or Thekkady, a night on the backwaters near Alleppey, and a few days by the sea. The state is long and narrow, and hill roads are slow, so plan fewer stops with more nights at each.

Kochi (COK) is the most convenient airport for the centre of the state. Thiruvananthapuram (TRV) suits trips that end at Varkala or Kovalam, and Kozhikode (CCJ) and Kannur (CNN) serve the north. Flying into one and home from another saves a long drive back.

Best places to visit in Kerala

You will not fit all of these into one trip, and you should not try. The itinerary that works is the one where your flights and hotel bases all point at the same route. Travelling with parents, young children or first-time international travellers? Cut the number of hotel changes and stay in areas with easier transport, even if it costs a little more per night.

Fort Kochi

Old streets, the Chinese fishing nets, churches, cafes and the Jew Town area of Mattancherry. Give it a full day and stay overnight instead of passing through.

Munnar

Tea estates, viewpoints and cool weather, about four hours by road from Kochi. Two nights is the minimum. Mornings are often clear and afternoons cloudy.

Thekkady

Home to the Periyar Tiger Reserve and spice plantations. Wildlife sightings are never certain, but the boat rides and guided walks show the forest well.

Alleppey (Alappuzha) backwaters

A night on a houseboat is the classic plan. Shared day cruises and canoe tours are cheaper ways to see the canals. Check what the houseboat price includes before you pay.

Kumarakom

A quieter backwater area on Vembanad Lake, with lakeside resorts that suit couples and families.

Varkala and Kovalam

Beaches near Thiruvananthapuram. Varkala has cafes on the cliff above the sea, and Kovalam is more resort style. The sea can be rough in the monsoon.

Suggested route from India

A simple loop is Kochi for one or two nights, Munnar for two, Thekkady for one, Alleppey for one night on the backwaters and Varkala for two, then a flight home from Thiruvananthapuram. With less time, drop Thekkady and spend the extra night in Munnar.

Before you book, check whether your arrival city and departure city should be different. Open-jaw tickets can save backtracking on larger countries, while short-haul trips may work better with one simple return ticket. Also compare baggage allowance, airport transfer cost and hotel check-in timing because those details often decide whether a cheap fare is actually a good fare.

Flights, hotels and booking notes

Delhi to Kochi flights and Mumbai to Kochi flights run every day, and Bangalore to Kochi is a short hop for travellers from the south. Compare an open-jaw plan as well: fly into Kochi and home from Thiruvananthapuram on two one-way tickets.

Houseboat prices change a lot with the season, the size of the boat and whether meals and air conditioning are included, so ask for the inclusions in writing. In the hill stations, stay close to the town or the sights you plan to see, because the roads are winding and slow after dark.

One more practical check for Kerala: look at the local events calendar, school holidays, weather pattern and public transport hours before final payment. A destination can look affordable on the fare screen and become expensive because the best hotel area is sold out, a major festival has raised room rates, or the arrival time forces a private transfer. Build the plan in this order: entry rules, flight gateway, hotel area, local transport, then paid attractions.

Do not choose a trip only from postcard places. The useful plan is the one that connects intent to action: the right trip length, sensible transport, hotels in the correct area and flights that do not make the first day miserable.
