Destination & City Travel Guide

About Mumbai

Mumbai handles a large share of India's banking, insurance, shipping and entertainment work, and its offices from Nariman Point to Bandra Kurla Complex set the pace for much of the western Indian economy. Two UNESCO World Heritage properties sit within the city: the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco ensemble around the Oval Maidan. A third, the Elephanta Caves, lies across the harbour. Visitors also come for Marine Drive, the museums of Kala Ghoda and street food at Girgaum Chowpatty.

What's new in Mumbai

  • June 2025: The final 76 km of the Samruddhi Mahamarg between Igatpuri and Amane near Thane opened on 5 June 2025, completing the 701 km expressway to Nagpur and bypassing the Kasara Ghat.
  • October 2025: The Aqua Line (Metro Line 3) opened its last section to Cuffe Parade to passengers on 9 October 2025. The fully underground line now runs from Aarey through both airport terminals, Bandra Kurla Complex, Worli and Churchgate to the southern tip of the city.
  • December 2025: Navi Mumbai International Airport began commercial flights on 25 December 2025, with IndiGo, Akasa Air, Air India Express and Star Air among the first airlines. For travellers bound for Navi Mumbai, Panvel or the Pune road it can be closer than the Santacruz airport.

Tips for travellers

Colaba and Fort put you within walking distance of the Gateway of India, the Kala Ghoda galleries and the Oval Maidan; Bandra and Andheri are more practical when a trip is built around suburban meetings or an early flight. Suburban trains on the Western, Central and Harbour lines carry most commuters, and the UTS on Mobile app from Indian Railways sells local tickets without a queue. Avoid boarding with luggage during the morning and evening rush.

The south-west monsoon usually reaches Mumbai in June and brings heavy rain until September, which can flood low-lying roads and slow the local trains. Ganesh Chaturthi, in August or September, draws large crowds to Lalbaug and the sea front for ten days. The Elephanta Caves are closed on Mondays. Dress conservatively at Siddhivinayak Temple and at Haji Ali Dargah, and carry a scarf to cover your head at the dargah.

Best time to visit Mumbai

November to February, with days of about 17-33°C and lower humidity. June to September brings heavy monsoon rain.

How to reach Mumbai

By Air: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) spans Santacruz and Sahar, about 25 km north of Colaba; allow 60-90 minutes by road to south Mumbai at busy times. The Aqua Line metro has stations at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and prepaid taxis and app cabs operate from both terminals.

By Rail: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Mumbai Central, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and Bandra Terminus handle long-distance trains. Vande Bharat trains run to Madgaon in Goa and to Gandhinagar via Ahmedabad, and the Rajdhani links Mumbai Central with New Delhi.

By Road: The Mumbai-Pune Expressway leads to Pune and the Samruddhi Mahamarg to Nashik and Nagpur. MSRTC and private coaches run to Pune, Goa and Gujarat from Dadar, Borivali and Mumbai Central.

What to do in Mumbai

Take a ferry from the Gateway of India to the rock-cut Elephanta Caves.
Spend a morning in the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya and the galleries of Kala Ghoda.
Watch the sunset from Marine Drive and eat bhel puri at Girgaum Chowpatty.
Look down on the Dhobi Ghat open-air laundry from the bridge at Mahalaxmi station.
Hike to the Kanheri Caves inside Sanjay Gandhi National Park.

Mumbai airport information

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM). Terminal 2 at Sahar handles all international flights and Air India's domestic network, while Terminal 1 at Santacruz serves low-cost domestic carriers. Some airlines changed terminals during 2026, and the two buildings are a 15-20 minute drive apart, so confirm the terminal before setting out.

About Muscat

Muscat stretches along the coast rather than gathering around one square. Mutrah Souq and its waterfront form one useful walking area; the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Royal Opera House and National Museum require trips to other parts of the city. This layout rewards a little transport planning. For travellers from India, the capital can be a short city break or the first stop before an inland route, with Muscat International Airport west of the older districts.

Tips for travellers from India

Mutrah is the better base for the souq and corniche, while Qurum places the Royal Opera House and coastal hotels closer. Neither choice puts every major sight within walking distance: the Grand Mosque is towards the airport, and Old Muscat lies beyond Mutrah. The National Museum stands opposite Al Alam Palace and can be reached by Mwasalat route 4. Pair it with the palace exterior and the views towards Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts, rather than crossing back to Qurum between stops.

For a Royal Opera House performance, the venue specifies formal or business dress and excludes jeans, T-shirts and trainers. House tours follow a separate smart-casual policy, so an afternoon architecture tour and an evening performance require different planning. Taxi arrivals for tours use Gates 3 or 4, and the opera house has a bus stop beside it. Oman Across Ages Museum is in Manah, around 140 kilometres from Muscat, not in the capital’s museum district; reserve it for an inland excursion. A day centred on Mutrah can instead combine the market, fort and waterfront without that long transfer. The airport’s western location makes a first stop near the Grand Mosque more logical than driving to Old Muscat and doubling back.

Best time to visit Muscat

November to March, typically about 18–30°C, for outdoor walks.
