Mumbai handles a large share of India's banking, insurance, shipping and entertainment work, and its offices from Nariman Point to Bandra Kurla Complex set the pace for much of the western Indian economy. Two UNESCO World Heritage properties sit within the city: the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco ensemble around the Oval Maidan. A third, the Elephanta Caves, lies across the harbour. Visitors also come for Marine Drive, the museums of Kala Ghoda and street food at Girgaum Chowpatty.
Colaba and Fort put you within walking distance of the Gateway of India, the Kala Ghoda galleries and the Oval Maidan; Bandra and Andheri are more practical when a trip is built around suburban meetings or an early flight. Suburban trains on the Western, Central and Harbour lines carry most commuters, and the UTS on Mobile app from Indian Railways sells local tickets without a queue. Avoid boarding with luggage during the morning and evening rush.
The south-west monsoon usually reaches Mumbai in June and brings heavy rain until September, which can flood low-lying roads and slow the local trains. Ganesh Chaturthi, in August or September, draws large crowds to Lalbaug and the sea front for ten days. The Elephanta Caves are closed on Mondays. Dress conservatively at Siddhivinayak Temple and at Haji Ali Dargah, and carry a scarf to cover your head at the dargah.
November to February, with days of about 17-33°C and lower humidity. June to September brings heavy monsoon rain.
By Air: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) spans Santacruz and Sahar, about 25 km north of Colaba; allow 60-90 minutes by road to south Mumbai at busy times. The Aqua Line metro has stations at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and prepaid taxis and app cabs operate from both terminals.
By Rail: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Mumbai Central, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and Bandra Terminus handle long-distance trains. Vande Bharat trains run to Madgaon in Goa and to Gandhinagar via Ahmedabad, and the Rajdhani links Mumbai Central with New Delhi.
By Road: The Mumbai-Pune Expressway leads to Pune and the Samruddhi Mahamarg to Nashik and Nagpur. MSRTC and private coaches run to Pune, Goa and Gujarat from Dadar, Borivali and Mumbai Central.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM). Terminal 2 at Sahar handles all international flights and Air India's domestic network, while Terminal 1 at Santacruz serves low-cost domestic carriers. Some airlines changed terminals during 2026, and the two buildings are a 15-20 minute drive apart, so confirm the terminal before setting out.
Jamnagar was the capital of the Jadeja rulers of Nawanagar, and the island palace on Lakhota Lake and the old bazaars still mark the centre. The Reliance refinery complex outside the city has grown into the largest in the world, and the city also has thousands of brass-parts workshops and a WHO global centre for traditional medicine. Visitors come for Lakhota Lake, the bandhani workshops, the Bala Hanuman temple with its unbroken chanting since 1964, and trips to Dwarka and the coral reefs of the Marine National Park.
Hotels around Lakhota Lake and the city centre suit a short stay. Auto-rickshaws are the usual transport, and a hired car is best for Dwarka, about 130 km west, and for the Marine National Park at Narara. In March 2026 the restored Bhujiya Kotho, a 19th-century fort tower that was once the tallest structure in Saurashtra, reopened to visitors after its first phase was inaugurated in September 2025. The old bazaars near Darbargadh are the place to buy bandhani saris and dupattas. Lakhota Lake is busiest at sunset, when families walk the promenade and, in winter, gulls and other migrant birds gather on the water.
October to March is the best season. The guided intertidal walks at Narara depend on low tides between November and February, so check the tide times before driving out. Janmashtami in August or September draws large crowds to Dwarka, about three hours away. Khijadia Bird Sanctuary, close to the city, is at its best for migratory birds in winter. Jamnagar sits near large refinery and port installations, and photography near them is restricted. The coral reefs at Narara are protected, so stay with the guide, wear shoes that can get wet and leave shells and animals where you find them.
October to March, with days of about 14-30°C. April to June is hot and humid.

By Rail: Jamnagar station is on the line from Rajkot to Dwarka and Okha. Expresses link the city with Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Delhi, and a Vande Bharat runs to Ahmedabad.
By Road: Highways run east to Rajkot and west along the coast to Dwarka. GSRTC buses leave from the central bus station.
