What actually happens to fares close to departure
Airlines price by how full the aircraft is, not by how many days are left. On a route that is selling well, the last ten days are the most expensive stretch of the whole booking window. On a route with seats still unsold, the same ten days can go the other way, because an empty seat earns nothing once the door closes.
That is why the table above is worth more than any rule about when to book: it shows what the fares actually are right now on these routes, rather than what they usually do. If your dates are even slightly flexible, shifting a departure off a Friday evening or a Sunday is normally the single biggest saving available at short notice.
Booking a flight at short notice, without the avoidable mistakes
Three things catch people out on a late booking. The cheapest remaining fare is often the most restrictive one, so check the check-in baggage allowance before comparing it with a slightly higher fare that includes a bag. Online booking usually closes a couple of hours before departure and airport check-in for a domestic flight closes 45 to 60 minutes before, so on same-day travel plan against the check-in cut-off, not the departure time. And the name on the ticket has to match your ID exactly — there is no time to fix that one at short notice.
If the route is short and the fare has not come down, it is worth checking the road. On Delhi–Jaipur or Mumbai–Pune an overnight bus booking often reaches your destination at a similar hour for a fraction of a late airfare. Where you land late, adding a hotel booking for the same night usually costs less than the fare difference between a late flight and an early one.
Last minute flight questions
Are last minute flights always expensive?
Not always. Fares usually climb in the final ten days as seats sell, but an airline would rather sell a remaining seat cheap than fly it empty, so a route with unsold inventory can drop close to departure. It is genuinely unpredictable - which is why the fares on this page are the ones we actually found, not a rule of thumb.
How late can I book a flight in India?
Online booking normally closes a couple of hours before departure, and airport check-in for domestic flights usually closes 45 to 60 minutes before. If you are booking on the day of travel, allow for the check-in cut-off rather than the departure time, and carry your ID exactly as it appears on the ticket.
What is the cheapest day to fly at short notice?
Mid-week departures - Tuesday and Wednesday - tend to have more unsold seats than a Friday evening or a Sunday, and the first flight of the morning or the last of the night is usually cheaper than a mid-morning slot. Shifting your departure by one day is often worth more than any other single change.
Can I get a refund on a last minute booking?
It depends on the fare you pick, not on how late you booked. Refundable and non-refundable fares are both usually available at short notice, and the cancellation rule is shown on the fare before you pay. Late bookings are more often non-refundable simply because the cheapest remaining fare tends to be the most restrictive one.
Do I need to pay more for baggage on a discounted last minute fare?
Often yes. The cheapest remaining fare is frequently a hand-baggage-only or reduced-allowance fare, so check the check-in allowance on the fare card before you compare it against a slightly higher price that includes a bag. On a short trip that can decide which fare is actually cheaper.
