About Baroda
Vadodara, known as Baroda until 1974, was the capital of the Gaekwads, whose Laxmi Vilas Palace is one of the largest private residences built in India. The city grew around a refinery, petrochemical and fertiliser plants, engineering works and the Maharaja Sayajirao University, known for its fine arts faculty. January 2026: The Bharuch-Kharel section of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway opened on 11 January 2026, extending the expressway south of Vadodara towards Navsari.
April 2026: The Godhra-Vadodara section opened to traffic on a trial basis on 13 April 2026, running from Bhamaiya near Godhra to Dodka near Vadodara; commuters report the trip taking about 45 minutes.
Tips for travellers
Alkapuri, Sayajigunj and the area near the railway station are central for a short stay. App cabs and auto-rickshaws are the usual transport, and there is no metro. The bullet train station beside Vadodara Junction is under construction, and the first high-speed section, between Surat and Bilimora, is planned to open in 2027.
October to March is the most comfortable season, and the city is at its busiest during Navratri in September or October, when large garba grounds run late into the night and hotels fill early. The Laxmi Vilas Palace is visited on a ticketed audio tour, and the Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum stands in the palace grounds. Champaner-Pavagadh, about 50 km north-east, pairs a hilltop temple reached by ropeway with the mosques of the old Sultanate capital below; start early to avoid the heat.

How to reach Baroda
By Air: Vadodara Airport (BDQ) at Harni is about 6 km north-east of the city centre; allow 20-30 minutes by road. Prepaid taxis, app cabs and auto-rickshaws serve the terminal.
By Rail: Vadodara Junction is one of the busiest stations on the Mumbai-Delhi line. Vande Bharat trains between Mumbai Central and Gandhinagar stop here, as do Rajdhani trains to Delhi and Mumbai.
By Road: The Ahmedabad-Vadodara Expressway runs north, and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway passes the city with open sections towards Godhra and Bharuch. GSRTC buses leave from the central bus station beside the railway station.

June 2026: Noida International Airport at Jewar (DXN) began scheduled flights on 15 June 2026, with IndiGo operating the first service. For some domestic routes it is a practical alternative for travellers based in Noida and Greater Noida.
Tips for travellers
For a two or three day stay, Connaught Place, Paharganj and Karol Bagh sit on the Blue and Yellow metro lines, while Aerocity suits early departures because it is next to the airport. The Delhi Metro is the quickest way across the city, and a smart card or a QR ticket bought on a phone saves time at the counters. October to March is the main sightseeing season, though smog can be heavy in November, and Diwali week fills hotels and trains. May and June are extremely hot.
The Red Fort is closed on Mondays. At Jama Masjid and Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, remove your shoes and cover your shoulders and legs; the gurudwara also asks everyone to cover their head and lends scarves at the entrance. Swaminarayan Akshardham does not allow phones or cameras inside, so leave them in the cloakroom or at the hotel.

By Air: Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) is about 16 km south-west of Connaught Place; allow 40-60 minutes by road, more at peak hours. The Airport Express metro line links Terminal 3 with New Delhi station, the Magenta Line serves Terminal 1, and prepaid taxis and app cabs run from all terminals.
By Rail: New Delhi, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Old Delhi and Anand Vihar Terminal are the main stations. Vande Bharat trains run to Varanasi, Amritsar and Katra, and Rajdhani services link the city with Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai.
